The guy who suggested it was a seminary student who lived in Joplin. He took us right out to Spooky Meadows' place. I believe that the man we met there was Spooky, himself; although, it may have been his successor. We went for a walk down the spooklight road, but the light chose not to come out that evening. What did come out was an unexpected snowfall and we, who were ill equipped for sleeping outside in snow, were forced to spend the next three days as the unwanted guests of old Spooky (or his successor, as the case may be). We chopped wood for him and did other odd jobs around the place. For that we received one boiled egg, one boiled potato and four cracker squares, twice a day. We all slept, fully clothed, crosswise in the same double bed. It may sound as though it was a bit of a rough go, but old Spooky shared what he had, both in terms of work and sustenance. When the weather warmed up enough for us to be on our way again, we bid Spooky a fond farewell and hiked out to the nearest highway, never to return. Over the years, my thoughts have returned, time and again, to those rundown old buildings and the spooklight "museum."Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05279546409476430977noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11558306.post-40262503480031807182013-01-03T22:25:23.388-08:002013-01-03T22:25:23.388-08:00I am on my way back from the spooklight, with a fe...I am on my way back from the spooklight, with a few friends. Their transportation was via horse and buggy. He learned of the light from his father who was born in Linn Ks in 1861. There can be no doubt that this light existed long before cars were ever dreamed up. Sometimes skepticism is just skepticism and is not relevant to the subject. This is one case. Generations of natives have observed this light. I was just a kid then but vividly remember going there while we were on vacation in the area. I have relatives in South West City and whenever we went to visit an uncle would take us to see the Spook Light. I remember the old spook light museum that sat at the end of the road and even remember playing the mentioned pinball machines while the adults would read all the clippings on the walls. When we used to go when I was a kid there was always 15-20 cars there either at various points along the road or visiting the museum. I can't say what the lights are but I CAN say what they're NOT. They are not headlights refracting from another source. The closest they ever came to us was about 200 yards. The one time that sticks out in my memory is when we were down there during the 4th of July. The light was doing it's thing down the road and someone further down shot a roman candle or some other rocket at it. The light actively avoided whatever it was that was being shot at it and then disappeared. A few seconds later (maybe 30) it reappeared further away to the west (probably a mile or so, hard to tell as the road dips and climbs a lot). It didn't like headlights and you had better luck if everyone kept theirs off. I took my wife there while we were on our honeymoon and saw it briefly but much of the atmosphere of the area is changed. Not as many people go there anymore apparently and the museum is gone if I remember correctly. Also, at that time (1984) road crews had cleared a lot of the trees away from the ditches on either side changing the spookiness of the area. Haven't been back there since 1989 but next time I go will be sure to go again.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14426102036352626816noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11558306.post-86683074332610421002007-07-25T20:18:00.000-07:002007-07-25T20:18:00.000-07:00It was 1977, I was in school at NEO in Miami and m...It was 1977, I was in school at NEO in Miami and my friend Cindy and I
used to go to the Spooklight every once in a while, when we weren't
working late, and look for the Spooklight. We would take a trip to
Spookies, hang out for awhile then hit the road and wait, and wait.
Usually we would see it off in the distance ahead of us...we would drive
our car closer and closer until we'd pass it but you could never see it
from behind...once you backed up, you could see it again.

On this particular night, probably in November of 1977, we saw the light
up close and personal.
We were sitting in my 1966 VW bug, watching it float around in front of
the car, just fascinated at what we were seeing when all of a sudden,
the light broke into 3 separate balls of light! It went under my car
and came out on the driver's side. The 3 lights seemed to swirl around
and around...they were kind of a yellowish color, then they flew back
under the car and came out on Cindy's side and did the same thing. Then
they flew back under the car, came out to the front of the car, the 3
merged back into one ball of light and it flew at a high rate of speed
down the road. This never happened again although we still continued
sitting on that road every chance we had - we would see it but not up
close like that time.

I've gone back one time since that year, back in 1994 or so but couldn't
locate the right road or something....I'd love to go back and try again.
I can't wait until my kids are old enough for me to tell them what
happened to mommy so long ago :)

Melody in NYAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12948965475780807035noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11558306.post-34146548889735120352007-05-31T10:16:00.000-07:002007-05-31T10:16:00.000-07:00I observed the Spook Light several times. On one occasion, I observed it with a spectrometer and I compared it with incandescent light sources. It wasn't even close to matching anything artificial. It appears to be a natural phenomenon.Justinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09895674023105776662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11558306.post-1170285792631264392007-01-31T15:23:00.000-08:002007-01-31T15:23:00.000-08:00I have seen this light many times over the years. ...I have seen this light many times over the years. I have seen it every time I went. When I was in college, a bunch of us would pile into a car and go, just for something to do. The only time I saw it that it scared me, was when several cars of students decided to go. People were out of their cars, talking, and I was standing with the 2 people I had rode with, and saw it coming across the field right by a barn. It headed right at us, and all 3 of us felt fear hit us, looked at each other, and said "Let's get out of here." and we left. I remember the Spookville Museum, and "Spooky" who told us stories about it. I even remember being fascinated at the newspaper clippings, expecially one that told of a couple in the 1940's or 50's that had the spook light come inside their car and sit on the top of the front seat back. There was even a picture of them, and their car...an old Chevy or similar car with a burned spot on the seat where it rested. I've seen the light dance, and move towards you, then disappear and show up in back of you, like it's playing games. I have seen it split into at least 5 lights, turning red, and even light green. The thing that most people don't mention, is that the light does NOT look like normal lights. You can always tell it from a street light, flashlight, or headlight, because it does not cast a beam of light. It is self-contained light. It glows, but doesn't cast a beam at ALL. THAT is why it has never been explained away by natural causes...it's not like anything you've ever seen before. I now live near the area not too far from State Line Rd. but I haven't been out to see it in several years. Maybe I should remedy that...KJLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14668272227281365901noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11558306.post-1168904443985891782007-01-15T15:40:00.000-08:002007-01-15T15:40:00.000-08:00I saw the light in April of 1968. My grandfather told me he had first seen it when he was ten years old. From the back of a mule in 1884. No highway, no cars, no airplanes.
