X-Zone Broadcast Network - Terry Lovelace

I spoke with Terry Lovelace about his abduction experiences. As many of you know, I’m not a fan of the tales of abduction, but Lovelace is a man with impressive credentials. He is a retired attorney who practiced civil litigation and criminal defense. More impressive is that he retired as an Assistant Attorney General for Vermont. Here is a guy who doesn’t need to create a tale of abduction to gain any sort of recognition. There is simply no motivation to come forward with something like this. You can listen to the interview here:

He talked about his first UFO sighting when he was only eight. He then had a series of encounters with what he called monkeys that were not real monkeys.
Terry Lovelace
These might have been some sort of a result of the UFO sighting, or they might be unrelated. These might have been nightmares or might have been real. The point is that I asked if he was familiar with Hypnagogic and Hypnopompic hallucination. These hallucinations are associated with sleep paralysis, and there is usually a manifestation of some sort of entity during these brief periods of paralysis. Lovelace said he was familiar with the terms, and that the monkeys disappeared when the hall light came on, breaking the spell. I thought this was interesting and suggestive of sleep paralysis.

We then talked about his abduction experience when he had been in the Air Force. I had wanted to get a little deeper into that, but the time ran out on us. He also mentioned that he had been chemically interrogated by members of the Air Force OSI. We touched on that, but again, time interfered with the discussion.

There were a number of aspects that I hope to follow up on in the future. For those who wish to learn more about Lovelace’s experiences, you can read his book, Incident at Devil’s Den or check out his website at:

http://www.terrylovelace.com.

Next week, I’ll be talking with John Greenewald of The Black Vault fame. He has just published a book about his experiences with FOIA and what he has learned from the thousands of government documents that he has reviewed. His book is Inside the Black Vault.

If you have a question that you would like that I ask Greenewald, put it into the comment section… These are moderated so that the question will not appear. I’ll make a note of it and try to fit it into the discussion. Thought I would try something new.

X-Zone Broadcast Network - Calvin Parker and Pascagoula Fame

This week I was able to speak with Calvin Parker of Pascagoula abduction fame. After remaining virtually silent about his experiences for decades, he has finally written a book, Pascagoula – The Closest Encounter, detailing what happened. While I’m sure that much of what we discussed is known, he did make a few revelations that I found interesting. You can listen to the interview here:

Calvin Parker
He did provide details about the interior of the craft and what he experienced. I had read that he had undergone hypnotic regression, which I find problematic, so I did ask if he remembered what happened prior to that. He said that he always had vivid memories, but had claimed he had passed out to avoid the circus that surrounded the claims of abduction. Charles Hickson, who was also there, had taken the opposite path, talking about the abduction from the very beginning. You can find the book here:

One thing I did find interesting was that he said Hickson had told him to stop at a convenience store so that he, Hickson, could use the telephone. Rather than call his family, Hickson first called Kessler Air Force Base to report the sighting. Told that the Air Force was no longer interested in those things and that if he felt threatened to report it to the local law enforcement, Hickson did just that.

I had wondered how the story got out. Parker said that people in the area, including reporters, had police scanners. The press apparently learned about the story as it was broadcast over the police radio. What I found amusing was that the local police, believing them to be drunk, told them to stay put until a patrol car could get there. They didn’t want them driving under the influence. This little anecdote seemed to lend a note of credibility to the tale.

While in the police station, Parker said that he and Hickson had been secretly recorded. The idea was to listen to what they had to say, thinking they would reveal the hoax. You can read more about this at:

There were other nuggets, including the names of other witnesses and apparently another encounter some twenty years later. For those interested in the Hickson/Parker case, there are some interesting aspects.

Next up: Nick Pope, to talk about his experiences in the Ministry of Defence on the UFO desk.

X-Zone Broadcast Network - Dr. Thomas "Eddie" Bullard

Dr. Thomas Eddie Bullard
This week I had the chance to interview Dr. Thomas “Eddie” Bullard. I had thought that we could talk about his academic study of alien abductions but we began with questions about the Great Airship of 1897. We did get to abductions eventually. You can listen to the whole interview here:

I had heard, a couple of weeks ago, about the Alexander Hamilton calf-knapping, which might be the first recorded case of an animal mutilation. Well, I mean that I knew about the case and thought that it had been explained years ago by a letter that Hamilton had sent to a local newspaper. I had heard that the newspaper article might not exist explaining the case but Eddie had some interesting insights into that.

From there we switched over to the Aurora, Texas, UFO crash which is also part of the 1897 airship wave. I have been to Aurora, Texas, interviewed some of the people who said they were alive at the time, given I was there in the early 1970s, which meant those I interviewed were in their early 80’s, so it could have been true. I have reported on that, including pictures from the Aurora cemetery, which you can find here:

and here:

and here:

The last part of the show dealt with Eddie’s study of alien abduction, based on his analysis of those stories. He provided some interesting comments on abductions, and we did get into a few specifics. I think that the conclusions we draw will surprise a few people.

Next week’s show: Adam Dew (Yes, that Adam Dew).

Topic: The Roswell Slides

Kathleen Marden - Commonalities Study Final Report

I received an email from Kathleen Marden (which is not to say that it came just to me, but one that she had sent to many of us interested in UFOs), niece of Betty Hill, about a statistical study she and Denise Stoner had been working on. “The Marden-Stoner Study on Commonalities Among UFO Abduction Experiencers,” as it is called, was a multiple-choice survey of those who believe they have been abducted by aliens, and a core of non-abductees as a control group.

Kathleen Marden
According to Marden, “Nearly a year ago, Denise Stoner and I met to discuss the commonalities that alien abduction experiencers share. As longtime abduction investigators/researchers, we were aware of certain repeating patterns of information and characteristics. The pertinent literature, the academic social science studies and the works of David Jacobs, PhD, Thomas Bullard, PhD, and the late Budd Hopkins, John Mack, MD, and others had identified several commonalities among abduction experiencers. But we had not been able to locate an academic study that was specific to our particular interests.”
This is something that should have been done years ago, after it was clear that something was happening to these people. It is not necessarily alien abduction, but there is something going on there. When Russ Estes, Bill Cone and I conducted our research in the mid-1990s, we had noticed some trends and wondered if there was any significance to them. If a trend could be spotted, then we might learn something that would help understand this aspect of UFOs or, at the very least, the people who were reporting it.
As Kathleen noted, other abduction researchers had also noticed some of this, but there had been no attempt to gather statistics about it. Although a long time in coming, this is the sort of scientific research that needs to be conducted, and it seems that Kathleen has the background to attempt it, based on her academic and work experience.

The study, as it stands, has had about 50 participants, and some of those are self-reported. She wrote, “Participants for our study were solicited via the MUFON UFO Journal and several alien abduction and UFO oriented websites. We also appeared on several radio shows and invited listeners to participate. Last, there were questionnaires at my vendor table at several UFO conferences and at Denise’s meetings. I posted the questionnaires, a letter of explanation, and an informed consent notice on my website at www.kathleen-marden.com. We communicated to participants that all questionnaires would be kept in a locked and secure location and destroyed at the end of the study. All personal identifying information that was volunteered would remain confidential. As a cautionary measure, we advised all potential participants that they should only complete the questionnaire if they could do so without feeling uncomfortable.”
After analyzing the data, there were a couple of interesting conclusions drawn. Marden wrote:

The vast majority was revisited—some more than 10 times—and was taken from their homes to an alien craft. Often the abduction experiencers sensed an impending visitation by alien entities before it occurred. The mode of communication between alien entities and humans is almost entirely telepathic. A new psychic awareness has emerged in the majority of experiencers and about half have found that they now have new healing abilities.
Immediately before or soon after a visitation they become aware of paranormal activity in their homes, such as light orbs, objects flying through the air or from walls, doors opening and closing without assistance, etc. The majority noticed malfunctioning electrical equipment, appliances, watches, computers, TVs, radios, cameras, etc.
Slightly more than half developed a new sensitivity to light and now crave salt. They feel a foreign object in their body and are fearful of being abducted again. Most have difficulty falling asleep and remaining asleep throughout the night. Those who have resolved their fearfulness are more likely to sleep restfully.
Finally, we want to express our sincere gratitude to those who participated in this study. It wasn’t an easy task. We asked them to visit my website and copy the 45 question or 16 question form. Then we requested that they fill in the multiple choice questions and add their comments and accounts of their personal experiences that would elucidate us regarding their specific information. They were then asked to mail their questionnaires to me or to return them via email. Although it required some effort on their part, it reduced the possibility that hoaxers would intentionally sabotage the study. In the end, we were very pleased with the knowledge we gained and the opportunity it gave us to support abduction experiencers and expand the UFO research community’s knowledge of the alien abduction phenomenon.

Those who wish to read the entire report, who want to see the statistical breakdown and the questions addressed, should visit her web site, address noted above. It is under the tab labeled “Commonalities Study Final Report,” directly under the banner (at the end of a list of places on the site). It is an interesting read.

The Alien Abduction Survey

This alien abduction survey surprised me a little. Given the nature of this blog, I suspected that alien visitation would receive the most votes, but I didn’t think that sleep paralysis would do quite so well.

Since I allowed multiple answers, quite naturally, the percentage totals add up to more than one hundred. And, of course, this is not a scientific poll, though it certainly suggests something about what those interested in these paranormal topics think.

So, what did we learn. There are a large number of people who believe that sleep paralysis can explain some of the alien abductions. Given that the symptoms of sleep paralysis mirror the symptoms of alien abduction, this is no real surprise. What we need is a way to discriminate between abduction and sleep paralysis. Kathleen Marden (seen here), the niece of Betty Hill, has told me that abductions are described in color but sleep paralysis is in black and white. I haven’t verified this, but it shows that Marden is searching for an answer and that is a good thing.

Few thought that hypnotic regression had much to do with abduction but I think that might be a misunderstanding of what hypnosis is and what it does, both good and bad. Too many regressions of the same subject can lead in all sorts of unreliable directions and I fear that too few abduction researchers understand this.

Imagination received more votes than I expected because imagination is suggestive of hoax. You could have an imaginative episode that you believe to be abduction that is not part of a conscious hoax. I say it that way because the abductee might believe in the abduction but imagined the circumstances without the help or guidance of an abduction researcher. I suppose we could call this confabulation in the truest sense of the word.

In the end it seems that many people understand there is not a single explanation for alien abduction. What we’re going to find in the end is a combination of answers that will account for everything. It’s just that we don’t have the proper combination figured out yet. When we get there, then we’ll have something important.
